Cloudinary & Salsify. using structured metadata for API calls

I am attempting to automate away some of the grind with our implementation of Cloudinary, What i would like is a python script that takes data entered into a "partnumber" structured metadata field, and search that in our PIM, Salsify. From there i would like to return certain properties from the salsify product listing and add them to our tags/structured metadata.
I am new to Python and API, but this would be incredibly helpful for our workflow. Assuming I have all of the credentials set up properly and everything else in the script is working, what snippet am I looking for to assign a variable from a structured metadata field with an external id of "partnumber"
